Unit 7: People Need the Lord
In Isaiah 55:9 the Lord said: “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (New International Version) Who can know the mind of God? He is indeed so far above us. But from Jeremiah, we do know that God does have a plan or Dream for each of us. We are known by him. He wants to bless us. We are to seek the Dream for our life. This unit attempts to provide a “rudder” to help the students steer their journey of life toward the Dream. God’s Dream for each student is a personal journey and must be found by each individual. As teachers, the best we can hope for is to shine a light in the right direction of life’s journey and our hope is that God will make the path visible to them. He holds us in His hand.
We can just drift through life doing as we please, but a day of accountability will come. That day came for the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. God gives us free choice, but not freedom from the earthly consequences of our behavior. This is a difficult subject for 11 to 13 year old students. At this age, they place the blame elsewhere for mistakes they make. But if we are to achieve God’s Dream for us, we must take accountability for our actions.
Failure is not uncommon, but we are not to let it destroy our life with God. We worship a God of forgiveness and second chances as we will see in this unit. When we fall on our face, our loving God picks us up and holds us in his comforting hands. Giving up at this age in life is a horrible choice that could lead to irrevocable actions as well as missing the joy of becoming the dream God has for that life.
A life in tune with God has a heart that rejoices. In Isaiah 55:2, the Lord says “Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.1” At the end of the life of each student, we hope that they will have a soul that is delighted by God’s Dream for them. A life that is lived in the manner God shows us in this verse is a life filled with a “Singing Heart” to the soul, a life filled with the Word of God. This is a lofty vision for the course, but a vision we must attempt with the next generation.
